Issue 10

Another busy month with the focus being primarily on training and recruitment.  During September, SRU held three World Rugby courses and a number of workshops to assist in preparing match officials for a number of high profile events in the next few months.  Also in this edition, latest updates on overseas appointments for our society members.  Please read on for more information.

Concussion Seminar

A very important topic and one that was very well attended by the Society.  The workshop, led by SRU Medical Staff, was designed to give referees a better understanding of the concussion protocols used in domestic rugby and the role of the referee in ensuring the safety of players.  A few key points were covered:

  • Head Injury Assessment (HIA) only operates at the elite level of World Rugby competitions.
  • Recognise and Remove is the concussion protocol that should be used in all domestic games in Singapore.
  • Referees have the power to stop a player from continuing in the game if they suspect that they may have a concussion.
  • Any player removed from the field for a suspected concussion MUST not play again that day.

Once a player has been removed they MUST not return to play again that day and should follow the Return to Sport (RTS) protocol.  For more information, please visit the Referee Resources section of SRU website, or click on the links below:

Training and Education

As we continue to prepare for the season ahead, SRU has been heavily involved in training and educating the rugby community with Level 1 and Level 2 Match Officiating courses taking place at Saint Andrews School and Level 1 Coach of Match Officials (CMO) taking place at the end of the month.

Eight of our developing referees attended the Level 2 course in which they gained an insight into their next steps towards gaining more confidence in officiating at higher level games in Singapore.  The Level 1 course had a massive interest with 25 participants from the various clubs and schools across the city attending.  Both courses were highly valuable as we aim to grow the game domestically.  We hope to see some of these new referees take up the whistle in the near future.

The Level 1 CMO course saw 12 participants attend in aiming to support the growing number of referees who have joined the Society over the past year.  The very best of luck to these new referee coaches in offering mentorship and support as we aim to develop the next generation of referees in Singapore.
