The SRU National Leagues kick off on 18th November this month. The Men’s and Women’s Premiership and the Championship will run con-currently every weekend as Singapore rugby begins our 15s season. As part of our build up to the upcoming competition, we will be featuring exclusive articles on both the Men’s and Women’s Premiership sides. For our very first featured article, we will be focusing on the Blacks Women’s Rugby Football Club!

Blacks Women’s Rugby Football Club (BWRFC) possibly the most successful Women’s side

BWRFC is the reigning champion of both the National Club 7s as well as the Women’s Premiership League. Their staggering success is clear, the club having won the annual National Club 7s 12 times and the National 15s league 8 times! Furthermore since 1998, BWRFC has been a steady supply line of players to both the Singapore National Women’s 7s and 15s teams, a testament to their quality of rugby. As recently as last month, BWRFC was represented by 8 out of the 12 players in the Singapore Women’s 7s squad at the Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Series 2017 (Sri Lanka).

Blacks Rugby Football Club was founded in 1955 and since then has been one of the most active rugby clubs in Singapore. However, it was only some 41 years later in 2006 that the Blacks Women’s wing was born. Since then, they have developed into the most successful side in Singapore Women’s Rugby despite their tender age of 21 years!

True to Blacks RFC’s ethos, most players that play for BWRFC are locals. They come from all walks of life, ranging from students to working professionals. Most of these girls developed their passion for rugby when they were still in school and this passion has persisted even after they have entered the workforce.

In preparation for the upcoming season, BWRFC travelled down south to Perth, Australia, to play a couple of friendlies with the local sides. The tour was a success, strengthening the bonds among the players and providing a great opportunity for them to hone their skills and work on their game against good opposition.

“The team’s preparation is coming along nicely. We’re off the back of an enriching Perth tour with our younger Blacks ladies stepping up, and we are working on a strong foundation for our new members. It will be a good mix of players this season, and we are really excited for the opportunities for our younger ones to gain experience in the league.” Noted Low Yu Hui, Blacks Women’s Captain.

When asked about retaining their title, she added, “Our goal is to earn our right to be champions again but more importantly, to have fun and showcase the character and spirit of our club rugby!”

In addition to their hard work on the pitch, BWRFC has been heavily involved off the pitch for the rugby community as well! Organising various rugby initiatives such as the Blacks Midnight 10s and Blacks Fun Touch, the club has been at the centre of growing a vibrant local rugby community. BWRFC also organises rugby clinics which are open to everyone. In fact, they held a 15s positional skills clinic as recently as the end of July which proved to be a huge success!

Here is wishing them the very best for the upcoming season!
