Week 1 of the SRU National League Premiership kicked off on a Friday night where the reigning Champions Wanderers RFC faced Bucks RFC. Wanderers have certainly beefed up their stocks for this season despite the key loss of Jaike Carter in the centres. They overcame Bucks 24 -7 cementing their claim as the favourites for an unprecedented 5th title in a row.

The other premiership match saw a youthful Saints side up against an SCC side looking for their first title in 20 years. SCC under new head coach Will Skinner started off strong and polished. Their heavy forwards pounded the Saints forward pack who to their credit defended stoutly. The first half saw some tries from SCC through their pack but Saints responded with some attractive counter attacking rugby from a backline that had no less than 4 Singapore 7s representatives. In the end, the SCC took advantage of some lapses in the 2nd half and ended the game 26- 13. It was a good start for the SCC and a positive one from a Saints RFC perspective as the side looks to make the semi finals again this season.

All in all a good start to the season with more to come.

This week will see a replay of last season’s finals. Wanderers RFC takes on Singapore Cricket Club tonight 7.45pm at Yio Chu Kang Stadium while Bedok Kings plays Bucks RFC tomorrow 5pm at Turf City A.
